FOUR DIE IN VAAL TRIANGLE ACCIDENTS


VAAL TRIANGLE. - Four people have died in serious vehicle accidents in the municipal area over the festive season. According to the Merafong City Local Municipality, two people were killed when their vehicle rolled on the R559 in Khutsong Ext. 5 on Christmas Day. The next day, another two people died when three vehicles collided on the R500 between Fochville and Parys. Seventeen people were seriously injured and another 17 sustained minor injuries. There were 111 people who escaped unharmed. Altogether, 147 accidents were reported in December, 97 of which were in Carletonville, 19 in Khutsong and 31 in Fochville. Traffic officers conducted numerous special operations. On 1 December, Merafong Traffic and the SAPS targetted public transport in Khutsong and on the N12 and issued 67 fines. On 7 December, Merafong and Gauteng traffic departments and the Khutsong SAPS arrested five people and issued 33 fines at the N12 and R500 crossing. Traffic officers from Merafong, Gauteng and North West joined the Khutsong SAPS in a roadblock on the N14 on 8 December. Two knives were confiscated, a person was arrested for dagga and 17 fines were issued. A whopping 1 089 fines were captured during a speed trap on the N12 on 15 December. On the same day, Merafong Traffic and the SAPS in Carletonville and Fochville arrested three people for drunken driving and issued 32 fines. Another 128 fines were issued by Merafong Traffic during speed operations on the N12 and R500 on 17 December. On New Year’s Eve, four drunken drivers were arrested and 20 fines issued throughout the municipal area. There were 698 written summonses, 18 parking fines and 11 024 camera fines.
