UPDATE: RUNNER AIRLIFTED TO HOSPITAL AFTER COLLAPSE

MEYERTON. - The runner here who got airlifted to hospital on Saturday morning (13 January) is local Meyerton park-runner, Dirk Smit (55).

It is alleged that a few of the fellow park-runners being professional paramedics, volunteers and casual runners, were on scene within seconds and expertly stabilized Smit, until ER24 arrived and took over.

"We received a lot of concerned messages and we responded directly on those yesterday to respect the privacy of the family.

The family has however asked that we do let everybody know that it is going well with him. He is looking much better today although in a bit of pain," said Meyerton Parkrun.

Smit enjoys the park-run tremendously, having completed seven Meyerton park-runs. He already wanted to know when he would be allowed to walk again.

The family express their deepest gratitude to everybody that assisted yesterday.

Smit is being looked after by specialists and will undergo further procedures during the week.
